Upward Spiral

I can predict which business is going to win and which is going to lose by checking just ONE thing. It's almost creepy how well this works. Like being a business psychic.

We all know about downward spirals, right? 

Man feels stressed at work. Doesn't know how to deal with the stress. Has a stiff drink to take the edge off. Wakes up feeling worse the next day. Finds it harder to deal with the stress. Takes that same stiff drink but earlier in the day.

Before you know it his breakfast is half a bottle of scotch. Downward spiral things.

It's easy to slip into that. Life can grind you down. That's why it's good to have people around you that call you out if you're sliding into self-destructive behavior. Friends, family, your wife.

If you don't have that support structure in place... it won't end well. Look at any dictator ever. They rise to power, no one is there to oppose them, they start making dumber and dumber decisions and end up spiraling downwards. Usually ends in them losing power and their life.

Business is the exact same thing.

(Well, almost. You don't usually lose your life if you fail. But it's the same principle.)

Ask a business owner a couple questions and within minutes you know if he's in an upward or downward spiral.

There's no neutral here by the way. Maybe it's going down at a glacial pace, but if nothing is happening the business is spiraling downwards. Gravity is real.

Show me a business owner that is content with the status quo, doesn't have anyone to bounce ideas off and doesn't try anything new because 'it won't work in my business anyway' and I'll show you a business owner that loses.

Show me a business owner that checks the numbers and tries new things every week and I'll show you a business owner that succeeds. He's going to win. It's inevitable.

Winning isn't hard. It's just hard work. But I promise you that it feels way better to be in that upward spiral compared to the downward spiral.
